Buffering and Solution Properties
MOPS is a water-soluble Good's buffer with a useful buffering range of approximately pH 6.5–7.9 and a pKa of approximately 7.2 at 25°C. It provides pH control in aqueous biological formulations operating near neutrality.
The free acid forms an acidic solution before neutralisation. Its specified pH is 2.5–4.5 for a 1% aqueous solution at 25°C. This supply form is distinct from MOPS sodium salt, CAS 71119-22-7.

Applications
Diagnostic Reagent Manufacturing
MOPS is used as a buffering raw material in selected biochemical diagnostic reagents. It supports near-neutral aqueous reagent systems containing proteins or enzymes. Solution colour and UV absorbance are relevant where the buffer contributes to the optical measurement background. Compatibility remains specific to the assay chemistry and detection wavelength.
Cell Culture and Microbial Media
MOPS is used in culture media for bacteria, yeast and selected mammalian cell systems. Its buffering range supports media formulations operating near neutral pH. It is also used in charcoal yeast extract medium. The appropriate concentration is specific to the organism and medium.
Protein Purification and Chromatography
MOPS is used in protein purification and chromatography buffers operating near neutral pH. It dissolves in water for incorporation into aqueous separation buffers. Its interaction with many metal ions is limited, although stronger interaction with iron can occur. MOPS can interfere with the Folin protein assay when present during protein measurement.
Electrophoresis Buffer Manufacturing
MOPS is a buffer component in denaturing RNA agarose gel electrophoresis. It is also used in selected protein electrophoresis systems. Commercial buffer manufacturers use the free acid in method-specific running buffer formulations. The final buffer composition depends on the nucleic acid or protein separation method.
Processing Characteristics
Near-neutral MOPS buffers can be prepared by neutralising the dissolved free acid, commonly with sodium hydroxide. Autoclaving MOPS solutions can cause yellowing; partial decomposition has also been reported during autoclaving with glucose. Membrane filtration is commonly used for MOPS solutions requiring a sterilisation step.
Packaging and Storage
MOPS commercial supply is offered in 25 kg drums. Keep containers tightly closed in a cool, dry storage area and protect the powder from moisture and contamination. Dry material can compact during storage. Prepared buffer solutions have separate storage requirements determined by their formulation.
