Phosphatidylserine for Nutrition Manufacturing
Plant-derived PS is produced through enzymatic conversion of lecithin phospholipids with L-serine. The resulting ingredient contains PS alongside other lipid components in proportions determined by the starting material and processing route. Commercial products range from concentrated phospholipid powders to preparations containing added carriers.
PS is used in products positioned in the cognitive nutrition, active ageing and sports nutrition categories. Its role in these formulas is to contribute a defined amount of phosphatidylserine within the manufacturer's finished-product composition. Capsules and tablets use dry ingredients, while liquid and softgel formats involve additional requirements for the lipid phase or dispersion system.
PS Content and Powder Composition
Commercial PS powders include 20%, 50% and 70% concentrations. Higher-concentration powders contribute the required PS amount with less ingredient mass, making them useful in compact capsules and combinations with several other ingredients. Lower-concentration powders contribute a larger accompanying phospholipid or carrier fraction to the formula.
The remaining composition can include phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidic acid. Added carriers or processing aids may also be present in formulated grades. Consequently, two powders with the same PS content can have different composition profiles, colour, bulk density and handling behaviour.
In multi-ingredient supplements, these composition differences affect the balance between PS, other phospholipids and the surrounding excipient system. In dry blends, the physical form influences powder distribution and filling. In oil-containing products, the accompanying lipid fraction becomes part of the fill composition.
Soybean and Sunflower Lecithin Sources
Soybean-derived PS uses soy lecithin as the phospholipid starting material. Sunflower-derived PS provides an alternative botanical source for ingredient programmes that specify sunflower origin. Both sources are used in commercial PS ingredients, including concentrated powder forms.
The source contributes to the fatty-acid composition of the phospholipid fraction. The finished ingredient's composition also reflects the conversion and purification process and any added carrier. Botanical origin, residual protein information and added ingredients are relevant to the product's allergen declaration and finished-label composition.
Technical Characteristics
| Characteristic | Product information |
|---|---|
| PS analysis | HPLC; HPLC-ELSD is used in some commercial specifications |
| Phospholipid composition | PS with varying proportions of accompanying phospholipids |
| Powder properties | Particle size, bulk density and flow vary with the physical grade |
| Lipid quality | Peroxide value is included in commercial PS quality specifications |
| Additional quality parameters | Moisture or loss on drying, residual solvents, elemental contaminants and microbiological quality |
| Aqueous behaviour | Conventional powder and specially formulated water-dispersible products have different dispersion characteristics |
Appearance ranges from light yellow to brown-yellow, with characteristic odour and taste. The colour of the phospholipid fraction is relevant in pale powders and lightly coloured chewable products.
Fine PS powder can have a low bulk density, which affects the volume occupied in a capsule and the behaviour of the powder during transfer. Granulated and other modified physical forms are separate commercial preparations. Particle size and bulk density are separate characteristics in commercial PS powder specifications.
In water-based systems, the phospholipid fraction requires appropriate dispersion. Conventional PS powder is not inherently a clear, fully water-soluble ingredient. Water-dispersible preparations incorporate a formulation system intended for liquid applications, with appearance and physical stability dependent on that system.
Applications
Capsules and Tablets
PS powder provides the phosphatidylserine component in single-ingredient and combination supplement capsules. Concentrated grades reduce the powder mass allocated to PS and leave more space for other formula ingredients. Bulk density, flow and particle distribution influence capsule fill volume and weight consistency on production equipment. In tablets, the lipid-containing powder also interacts with the binder, filler and lubrication system, affecting the suitability of the blend for compression.
Dry Nutrition Blends and Stick Packs
PS powder is incorporated into dry blends containing other nutrition ingredients and excipients. Uniform distribution is particularly relevant when the PS ingredient represents a small proportion of the complete serving. Differences in particle size and density can contribute to segregation during blending, transfer and filling. In products reconstituted before consumption, the PS ingredient also contributes to the dispersion, appearance and mouthfeel of the prepared drink, alongside the other formula components.
Softgel Products
PS can be incorporated into softgel fills through an appropriate oil-based ingredient preparation or powder dispersion. Commercial PS oils contain a defined lipid carrier, such as MCT oil, and have a different composition from the starting powder. With powder-based fills, wetting and suspension behaviour affect the distribution of PS in the oil phase. Fill viscosity and sedimentation are relevant to holding and filling operations, so an oil preparation and a dry powder remain distinct raw-material forms.
Functional Foods and Chewable Products
PS ingredients are also used in selected bars, gummies and other functional food formats. These matrices bring the lipid ingredient into direct contact with flavour systems, water or heat during manufacture. Ingredient colour and characteristic taste can influence the finished product, particularly in lightly flavoured formulations. PS retention and physical distribution depend on the full food matrix, processing conditions and packaging; permitted uses are specific to the ingredient and destination market.
Quality Characteristics
Commercial PS specifications commonly cover phosphatidylserine content, powder appearance, moisture or loss on drying, peroxide value and microbiological quality. Elemental contaminants and residual solvents are additional quality parameters.
Chromatographic composition data can also describe accompanying phospholipids such as PC, PE, PI and PA. This information is relevant to concentrated phospholipid ingredients and to formulas that contain several lipid components. The full composition includes any added carrier or processing aid, as well as the measured phospholipid fraction.
Packaging and Storage
A common bulk packaging format for PS powder is a 25 kg fibre drum with sealed inner packaging. Bags and cartons are also used for some commercial products. The inner packaging protects the powder from environmental exposure, while the outer container provides protection during handling and transport.
PS powder requires protection from moisture, strong light and excessive heat. Containers remain tightly closed during storage, and opened packaging requires careful resealing. Storage temperature and shelf life are product-specific and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Documents and Commercial Supply
Product specification, batch COA, SDS and source or composition declarations are handled for the selected supply. Allergen, GMO and certification documents are supplied only where available for that manufacturing grade. MOQ, packing details and estimated dispatch time are included in the commercial quotation.
