What is Hydroxypropyl cellulose CAS 9004-64-2?

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (HPC) CAS 9004-64-2 is a nonionic cellulose ether made by reacting natural cellulose with propylene oxide after alkalization.

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (HPC) is a nonionic cellulose ether polymer obtained by chemical modification of natural cellulose. Due to the introduction of hydroxypropyl group (-OCH₂CH (OH) CH₃) in its molecular structure, Hydroxypropyl Cellulose is water-soluble, film-forming and thermogel-forming, and hydroxypropyl cellulose uses as a functional additive in the fields of medicine, food and daily chemicals.

    Application

    1. Pharmaceutical field (core application field, must comply with pharmaceutical-grade standards, such as USP, EP, CP)

    Oral solid dosage form excipients

Binder: Hydroxypropyl Cellulose HPC is used in the granulation process of tablets and capsules (for example, in wet granulation, a 1% to 5% HPC aqueous solution is used as a binder to enhance the fluidity and hardness of the granules and reduce the delay of tablet disintegration).

Disintegrant: Low degree of substitution HPC (degree of substitution 0.2-0.4), due to its high content of unetherized hydroxyl groups, has strong swelling properties after absorbing water and can be used as a disintegrant for tablets (dosage 2% - 5%).

Coating material: Hydroxypropyl cellulose in tablets. HPC ethanol solution (5% - 10%) is used for coating tablet films to form a transparent protective film, which masks the bitter taste of the drug, enhances stability, and does not affect disintegration.

Sustained-release skeleton material: High-viscosity HPC can be used as the skeleton matrix for sustained-release tablets (with a dosage of 20% to 50%), and the drug release rate is controlled by the dissolution rate of the HPC gel layer, achieving long-lasting release for 12 to 24 hours.

    Topical excipients

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose HPC is used in eye drops, gels and ointments as a thickener (to adjust the viscosity of the preparation and prolong the residence time of the drug at the site of action) and a stabilizer (to prevent the sedimentation of drug particles).

    2. Hydroxypropyl cellulose in food (must comply with food-grade standards, such as FDA, GB 2760)

    Thickening agents and stabilizers

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose HPC is used in beverages (such as lactic acid bacteria beverages, fruit juices), ice cream, and jams to enhance product viscosity, improve texture (such as the fineness of ice cream), and prevent stratification or water separation (dosage: 0.1% to 1.0%).

    Film-forming agent

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose HPC is used in "edible cling film" for fruits and vegetables (HPC aqueous solution is sprayed and dried to form a transparent film), reducing water loss and microbial contamination, and extending the preservation period.

    Baking improver

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose is added to bread and cake dough to improve the dough's extensibility, making the finished product fluffy and soft, and extending the shelf life (the dosage is 0.2% to 0.5%).

    3. In the field of daily chemicals and cosmetics

    Skin care products

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose, as a moisturizer and thickener, is used in lotions, face creams and essences to increase the viscosity of the products (enhance the skin feel when used), and at the same time form a film on the skin surface to reduce water evaporation (the moisturizing duration can reach 4 to 8 hours).

    Makeup

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose is used in foundation and mascara as a film-forming agent and dispersant, enhancing the adhesion of makeup (less likely to come off), and at the same time making the pigment disperse more evenly (more stable color).

    Toothpaste

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose, as a binder and thickener, regulates the viscosity of toothpaste (preventing solid particles from settling), improves the "stringy feel" during brushing, and is non-irritating.

    4. Other industrial fields

    Coatings and inks

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose is used as a thickener and leveling agent in water-based coatings and printing inks to prevent pigment sedimentation and improve the leveling property of the coatings (avoiding brush marks).

    Building materials industry

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose is used in cement mortar and putty powder as a water-retaining agent (to reduce excessive water evaporation and prevent cracking) and thickener (to improve construction fluidity).

    Electronic materials

High-purity HPC is used as the film-forming resin for photoresist in the semiconductor chip manufacturing process (the impurity content must be strictly controlled).

    Features

    1. Multiple viscosity specifications are available. Eight different HPCS are matched with different viscosities according to the customer's pharmaceutical field. The application effect is better.
    2. The content of arsenic compounds is low. The arsenic content on the market is less than 200 PPM, and we can control it to less than 2PPM. Adding it to drugs is less harmful and more effective.
    3. We can customize high-viscosity HPC. The high-viscosity specification can be used as the material for sustained-release and controlled-release preparations. By adjusting the viscosity, the drug release rate can be precisely controlled, thereby increasing the production efficiency of the finished product.
