1,2-Pentanediol is a colorless and transparent liquid, b.p.206℃, n20D 1.4400, relative density 0.971, soluble in organic solvents such as alcohol, ether and ethyl acetate.

1,2-Pentanediol is an excellent humectant with antibacterial properties, and its synergistic effect with traditional preservatives also helps reduce the amount of traditional preservatives in formulations. In sunscreen products, it is more helpful to improve the water resistance of the product and the solubility of some ingredients. 1,2-Pentanediol helps to stabilize formulations while also reducing the sticky feel of formulations due to the addition of polymers.
