Mycophenolate mofetil is a precursor of active mycophenolic acid (MPA), an immunosuppressive component extracted from the culture fluid of Penicillium. It is an inhibitor of inosine mononucleotide dehydrogenase (IMPDH), which is necessary for the synthesis of guanine nucleotides, especially for the classical synthesis of guanine nucleotides required by lymphocytes.
