Sodium 3-hydroxybutyrate widely exists in nature, human blood and urine. It shows optical activity and can be crystallized in pure state. Hydroxyl groups can associate and dissolve easily in water, ethanol, ether, and dry steam. Because of the existence of polar group OH, its k acidity is enhanced, and it is easy to react with alcohols or acids. The polymer of 3-hydroxybutyrate can be decomposed by microorganisms in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, so it can be used in biodegradable plastics, but there is no large-scale industrial production at present.
