Indole is an aromatic heterocyclic organic compound with a bicyclic structure in its chemical formula, containing a six membered benzene ring and a five membered nitrogen-containing pyrrole ring, hence also known as benzopyrrole. Indole is an intermediate of plant growth regulators indole-3-acetic acid and indole-butyric acid. White shiny scaly crystals that turn dark when exposed to air and light. At high concentrations, there is a strong unpleasant odor, and when highly diluted (concentration<0.1%), it appears as orange and jasmine like floral fragrance.
