2-phosphonic acid butane-1,2, 4-tricarboxylic acid (abbreviated as PBTCA) is a new type of organic phosphonic acid water quality stabilizer. Its molecular structure contains both phosphonic acid groups (-PO₃H₂) and carboxyl groups (-COOH), and it has multiple functions such as chelation, scale inhibition and corrosion inhibition. 2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid is a commonly used high-efficiency water treatment agent in industrial circulating water, oilfield water injection and other systems.

1. Industrial circulating cooling water system: As a scale and corrosion inhibitor, it is used in open circulating water systems in industries such as steel, power, chemical engineering, and metallurgy to prevent the formation of scale such as calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, and calcium phosphate in heat exchangers and pipelines, and to inhibit the corrosion of metal materials such as carbon steel and copper alloys.
2. Oilfield water injection system: 2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid is used in the water injection pipelines, wellbores and formations during the oilfield oil extraction process to prevent the deposition of scale (such as calcium carbonate, barium sulfate) from blocking the formation pores, while protecting the water injection equipment from corrosion and improving the oil extraction efficiency.
3. Boiler water treatment: 2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid is used for the feed water treatment of medium and low pressure boilers, inhibiting the formation of scale inside the boilers, and reducing the risk of reduced thermal efficiency and equipment damage caused by scale.
4. Metal surface treatment: As an additive of metal cleaning agents, 2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid enhances the chelating and removing ability of scale and rust on the metal surface, and at the same time forms a temporary protective film after cleaning to prevent secondary rusting of the metal.
5. Reverse Osmosis (RO) system: 2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid is used in combination with other scale inhibitors to prevent scale formation on reverse osmosis membranes, thus avoiding the decline in flux and shortening of membrane lifespan caused by scaling on the membrane surface.
